fönt a tejút is már más; határsáv, hol fény pásztáz, aknamező; a csillag: kémlelő ablak,

a nyüzsgő égi sátor egyetlen munkatábor; mert zsarnokság szól lázból, harangozásból,

a papból, kinek gyónói, a prédikációkból, templom, parlament, kínpad, megannyi színpad;

hunyod-nyitod a pillád, mind az tekint rád; mint a betegség, veled megy, mint az emlék,

vonat kereke, hallod, rab vagy, erre kattog; hegyen és tavak mellett be ezt lehelled;

cikáz a villám, az van minden váratlan zörejben, fényben, szív-hökkenésben;

a nyugalomban, a bilincs-unalomban, a záporzuhogásban, az égig érő rácsban,

a cellafal-fehéren bezáró hóesésben; az néz rád kutyád szemén át,

s mert minden célban ott van, ott van a holnapodban, gondolatodban, minden mozdulatodban;

mint víz a medret, követed és teremted; kémlelődsz ki e körből? ő néz rád a tükörből,

the swarming heavenly tent

is a monstrous forced-labor camp;

for tyranny speaks

out offener, out of the peal of bells,

out of the priest in the confessional, from the sermon;

church, parliament, torture-chamber are all theatrical stages;

open and close your eyes: tyranny stares at you; like a sickness

it stays with you like memory;

in the trains wheels you can hear it, "You’re a slave, you’re a slave” it repeats; on a mountain or beside a lake that is what you breathe;

lightning flashes: it is this that’s present in every startling noise and light, in the missing heartbeat;

in tranquility:

the boredom of shackles,

in pouring rain:

bars that reach up to the sky;

in falling snow:

white like the prison wall;

it looks at you

out of your dog’s eyes,

and because it’s there in every goal, it is part of your tomorrow, your thoughts, your every move;

like a river in it’s bed

you follow and you create it;

no use trying to flee

it looks at you from the mirror.

it watches you, you would run in vain, you’re both the prisoner and the jailer; into the tang of your tobacco, into the fabric of your clothes
