find much good teaching and preaching, there were mature debates (yes, there were exceptions), but almost no rabble rousing, no incitement to hatred, and ultimately a sincere respect for others. Honter, for his part, seems to have possessed just the right virtues to help the process along, as did most of the better Saxon religious leaders; but on the Hungarian side, too, there were men of similar bent and caliber, some indeed themselves of Saxon or partially of Saxon origin, such as Heltai and Dávid. Even Antal Verancsics, Catholic provost of Gyulafehérvár, who would later become Cardinal of Esztergom, remained Honter’s friend to the very last. “As soon as the end of winter is come, when the sun shines warmly and the roads are passable once more” — he wrote to Honter in March of 1540 — “I shall come, God willing, to Kronstadt, not to see Kronstadt, nor the [river] Olt, nor yet the Burzenland, but to embrace you” (Teutsch 1925, 256). Perhaps Transylvania was fortunate in that its Reformation was made not so much by militant churchmen, as by kind teachers beloved by its people.
