The Hungarian-American Officer-Pilot of Continental Airlines Who is Proud of and Cherishes His "Roots": CAPTAIN FRANK (FERENC) BOGYOS In 1983, at the age of 27, Frank (Ferenc) Bogyos became one of the youngest pilots in the United States to Captain a Boeing 737, the newest passenger aircraft in the skies. This seemed to be a natural step in a flying career that started when Frank was just out of high school. The beginning was at a small airport in Southeast Wisconsin. THOSE HUNGARIAN ROOTS Frank Bogyos, who is now enthusiastically studying the Hungarian language and familiarizing himself with rural Hungarian life on his many visits to the "old country", is a second generation Hungarian-American whose grandparents immigrated to the United States in 1912. His grandfather, Ferenc, came from Saregres, and his grandmother, Julia Gyula, came fromTurisvandi. Because of his position as an airline pilot, Frank is able to make many visits to Hungary. During these he is pleased to visit relatives in Budapest, Saregres and the Lake Balaton area. In his visits to small villages away from the cosmopolitan areas, Frank has become something of an expert in the art and technique of processing pigs into sausage. DETERMINED TO FLY It was obvious from the very beginning that young Frank Bogyos was determined to become a pilot. As we have seen, his lessons began when he was first out of high school. He continued earning flight ratings while he attended the University of Wisconsin. In order to pay for his training between 1973 and 1976, Frank worked part time at UPS. This was his daily schedule: from 4.00 AM TO 9:00 AM - loading trucks; from 10:00 AM TO 5:00 PM - attending college classes; between 8: 00 PM and 11:00 PM - studying for his college courses.
