Dr. Vincze Károly refor­mátus főesperes most 20 éve jött Perth Amboyba s foglalta el a Független Magyar Református Egyház itteni gyülekezetének lelkipásztori tisztjét. Amikor most, ebből az alkalomból egy­háza és barátai jubileumi ün­nepléssel fejezik ki az egész a­­merikai magyarság előtt tiszte­letben álló és nagyrabecsült lel­kipásztor iránti ragaszkodásu­kat és szeretetüket, illő, hogy mi is méltó megemlékezéssel kö­szöntsük őt s emléket állítsunk ennek az alkalomnak. Az aláb­biakban adjuk “életrajzát,” a­­mit a jubileumi emlékkönyv szá­mára állítottunk össze és ami a Híradó és szerkesztője virág­csokra ennek az igaz embernek, jó magyarnak, kitűnő lelkipász­tornak és kiváló amerikai ma­gyar vezetőemberünknek jubi­leuma alkalmából, akinek köz­tünk való szereplését és munkás­ságát épen úgy, mint az ő barát­ságát mindig nagyra értékeltük és arra mindnyájan, mindig büszkék vagyunk. DR. VINCZE KÁROLY ÉLETRAJZA Dr. Vincze Károly 1898 december 22-ikén született a felső-szabolcsi Dögé községben. Szülei, Lovas Vincze Dániel és Oláh Eszter, egyszerű s két kezük munkája után élő emberek voltak. Elsőszülött fiukon kívül még három fiút és három leányt neveltek fel. Az apa 1938 júniusában hunyt el, az édesanya pedig ez év február 23-ikán. A testvérek élnek, egyet kivéve, aki a második világháború alatt mint orosz hadifogoly pusztult el. Dr. Vincze elemi iskoláit szülőfalujának egyházi iskolájában végezte. Mivel a szomszédos Kisvárdán az állami főgimnázium akkor nyílott meg, tanítója felhívta rá lelkipásztorának, néhai Osváth Pálnak, Kiss Áron debreceni püspök vejének a figyelmét. Annak és általa szer­zett pártfogóknak a nógatására tanulni adták szülei. A tandíj csak egy fél évig volt probléma. Onnan kezdve jeles előmenetelére tekintettel tan­díjmentességet és állami ösztöndíjakat kapott, valamint mások tanítá­sával segített magán. 1916 májusában katonának sorozták be és a had­sereg kötelékében volt 1918 novemberéig. Érettségijét mint szabadságos katona tette le. A sárospataki theológiai akadémiára 1918 decemberében iratkozott be. Mint itt is jeles tanulót és ifjúsági vezérmunkást tanulmá­nyai végeztével 1922 júniusában főiskolai széniornak s mint ilyet főisko­lai káplánnak és segédkönyvtárnoknak is választotta a főiskolai hatóság. Erről a tisztéről azonban még ugyanazon évnek a szeptemberében le­mondott és mint stipediumos diák a princetoni theológiai szeminárium­ba jött, ahol 1923 májusára megszerezte a theológiai magisteri fokozatot. Ugyanennek az évnek a tavaszán a cartereti független magyar reformá­tus egyház választotta meg lelkipásztorának. Innen 1925 júniusában tör­tént nősülése után visszatért Magyarorszába és úgy jött vissza állandó tartózkodásra Amerikába. Felesége a Woodbridgen született Éliás Ilona okleveles high school tanítónő; Cartereten született s már szintén diplo­más leányuk Judith-Helen. A perth amboyi független magyar református egyház lelkipásztor­­ságát 1929 junius 9-ikén foglalta el Dr. Vincze Károly. Pásztor­­sága anyagiakban és lelkiekben nyomot hagyó, markánsan kálvini szelle­mű és építő. Bokros gyülekezeti, közegyházi és közéleti teendői között is felkészült a theológiai doktori vizsgára és 1931 december 3-ikán örvende­ző szülei jelenlétében Debrecenben avatta doktorrá a gróf Tisza István tudományegyetem. Pár évvel később az ősi sárospataki főiskola ismételt kísérletet arra, hogy theológiai tanárnak nyerje meg. Az akkori magyar református hivatalos körök azonban akkor fáztak még az “amerikai szel­lemtől’’ is, igy a megválasztás nem nyert hivatalos megerősítést. Mintegy az akkori huzódozás jóvátevéséül, az ősi iskola által képviselt szellem hü képviseléséért ,a magyar kálvinizmus ügyének és elveinek amerikai és Amerikán túli szolgálatáért jött a hir 1947. év tavaszán a tiszteletbeli theológiai tanárrá választásról. A megtiszteltetést az alábbi hivatalos jegyzőkönyvi kivonatban közölték Dr. Vinczével: “A Tiszdninneni Református Egyházkerület Lelkészi Főjegyzője. Sárospatak, 1947 április 21. 39/1947. szám. Kivonat a Tiszdninneni Re­formátus Egyházkerület Tanácsának 1947 március llv-én Miskolcon tar­tott ülése jegyzőkönyvéből. 9/c pont.” Dr. Vincze was born as the eldest child among four brothers and three sisters to the late Daniel L. Vincze and wile, née Esther Olah, on December 22, 1898, in the farming village of Doge, County of Szabolcs, Hungary. He received his primary education in the parochial school of the local Reformed Church. At the promptings of teacher and pastor his parents allowed him to strive for a secondary education in the State Highgymnazium ( a combination of high school and college with an eight year course) at the nearby county-seat of Kisvarda. Free tuition, state scholarships and earnings made by tutoring other students supple­mented the meager financial assistance that could be given by the parents. Toward the end of the fifth year, in May 1916, Dr. Vincze en­listed in the army and remained there, first as an infanterist and then as a machine-gunner, until the demobilization in November 1918. The end of the war found him on the Italian front in Tirol. He completed his secondary education on leaves from the army, carrying his textbooks with him even while in the service, where he also passed with distinc­tion two rigid courses for officership. He thinks very highly of military life. He contends that it fitted him for life at least as much as all of his school years put together. In December 1918, he enrolled in the now 418 year old Reformed Theological Seminary at Sárospatak, a pride of Hungary and that of the Reformed Church in that country. His four year stay in the venerable old institution is still a living memory. There was no honor or reward at the disposal of the seminary which was not heaped upon him for his excellence in School work, his tireless activities in student organizations, for exploring new fields of service. In recognition, after graduation he was retained in the triple capacity of school chaplain, dean of students and assistant librarian. His real ambition, however, was to continue studying theology. In September 1922, on the very day of his ordination, he resigned from his offices and left for the U.S.A. for postgraduate work at Princeton Theological Seminary. Here, in the month of May, 1923, he received his master’s degree. By that time, from the month of March on, he was the pastor of the Free Magyar Reformed Church at Carteret, N. J. While in Carteret, on June 27, 1925, he married his wife, the former Miss Helen Elias, a High School teacher, of New Brunswick, N. J. Their only child, Judith Helen, was also born at Carteret, on September 22, 1926. At the present the daughter herself is a teacher in the Franklin School at Me­­tuchen. After the wedding Dr. and Mrs. Vincze made a visit to Hungary. On March 13, 1929, Dr. Vincze became a citizen of the U.S.A. The Carteret ministry ended and the pastorate with the Perth Amboy congregation began on June 9, 1929. Ever since that day pastor and congregation devoted themselves to constructive efforts and it is well nigh unbelievable how swiftly the years rolled by. The records of his ministry, as in the case of the years spent in Carteret, speak for them­selves; thus it is unnecessary to go into details. In the midst of his ceaseless activities Dr. Vincze also managed “Dr. Vincze Károly sok talentumáért a kegyelmi ajándékokat adó Istené a dicséret. Jó és bölcs pásztor, erélyes és okos egyház­­kormányzó, folyton növekvő szellem. A tudományos theológia, gyakor­lati gyülekezet-szolgálat és egyházépités mezőin is értékes irodalmi ter­mékek tesznek mellette jó bizonyságot. Pataki Alma Mater-ünknek sok­szorosan kipróbált hüségü, önzetlen, áldozatos gyermeke; több, mint két évtizedes tengerentúli szolgálatában is örök legátusa. U.S.A.-ba készülő és kijutott dikájainknak utegyengetöje, protektora és tutora volt,----és reménységünk szerint marad is — mindenha. S ha Főiskolánk hü fia szá­mára érték a ‘honoris causa’ theológiai professzorság, másfelől Theológiai Akadémiánk számára is értékgyarapodás, ha Dr. Vincze Károlyt tisztelet­beli tanárainak díszes sorába iktathatja.” “Határozat. Egyházkerületi Tanács a javaslatot egyhangú örömmel elfogadja. DR VINCZE KAROLY főesperest a Sárospataki Református Theológiai Akadémia tiszteletbeli tanárává me gválaszt jja. Reméli, hogy e tisztség azt az áldott értékcserét, mely Dr. Vincze Károly és Főiskolánk között eddig is fennállott, még inkább kiteljesiti. Az uj tiszteletbeli ta­nár életére és szolgálatára a Mindenható gazdag áldását kéri.” “A kivonat hiteléül: Dr. Szabó voltán, egyházkerületi főjegyző.” A művészi kivitelű tiszteletbeli tanári doplomát méltó keretek kö­zött az ősi főiskola Amerikában időző igazgatója, Dr. Zsiros József, adta át 1948 november 21-ikén. Amerika magyar közvéleménye előtt méltó személyt ért ez a ki­tüntetés. Dr. Vincze egy negyedszázadja napszámosa nem csak a Függet­len Amerikai Magyar Református Egyháznak, hanem az egész amerikai magyar református és felekezeti-közi életnek is. Sohasem élt csak magá­nak, hanem hol egy, hol más köztisztség révén szolgája, egyik vezérmun­kása volt a köznek is, mindig odaadással és alapossággal járván el a rábizottakban. Kálvinista vonatkozásban pedig a magyar kereteket mesz­­sze túlmenően szerzett ismeretséget magának, sigetséget, jobb megértést és megbecsülést a magyarságnak. Lelkipásztorának személye és munkássága nyomán messze tájakon jó hire és neve van derék, nemes gyülekezetének is, amellyel bármely házastárs előtt példaként világítható békességben élt és munkálkodott az elmúlt két évtized alatt. Húsz esztendő teljesítményeit és eredményeit ne­héz volna felsorolni. Egy bizonyos: A Perth Amboyi Független Magyar Református Egyház drága erőssége, hitben, rendben, gyakorlatban, az ősi magyar kálvinista keresztyénségnek. Lelekipásztor és gyülekezet hála­adással tekinthetnek vissza a múltra és bizakodással előre a jövendőbe. Hírük, nevük példaadásra kötelezik mindkettőjüket az ősi értékek meg­tartásában és tovább fejlesztésében. Segitse őket az Isten! (Ikafalvi) I man. At one time he was a member of the executive Board of the Rari­tan Council of the Boy Scouts of America. (He was the founder of one of Hungary’s strongest Boy Scout troops, while a student at Sárospatak.) Lie is one of the ex-presidents of the Raritan Bay Protestant Ministers’ Association. He took his share in all the patriotic efforts, social and political aspirations of the Magyars in the city. He also carried the name of Amboy well beyond the city’s boun­daries. For two terms he was the president of the national organization of the American Hungarian Reformed Ministers. He served for four ycais as one of the directors of tile American Hungarian Federation and of the American Hungarian Relief, Inc., the one with headquarters in Washington, the other one in New York City. Now for the eleventh year he is a member of the Supreme Council of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, a fraternal insurance organization with head­quarters in Washington. In the midst of these diverse interests and ways to be of service, Dr. Vincze still» manages to learn and to write. For a quarter century he wrote hundreds of theological, practical, devotional and commentative articles for his denomination’s monthly, the “Magyar Church”. He is the author of two books and of several pamphlets; also a member of the Calvinistic Action Committee of America, Inc. (with headquarters at Grand Rapids, Mich.), for the fourteenth year a regular correspondent to the Calvin komm magazine, and frequent contributor to the Hunga­rian press in America. Some of his articles were also published in Hun­gary. His beautiful study and personal library draws favorable comments from his guests and visitors. A man with such a pre-occupation is very much in need of some sort of a hobby. Dr. Vincze’s main hobby is wood work, but there is hardly any trade which he would not tackle in the case of an emergency. He loves his tools as well as his books. He has his shop in the cellar of the parsonage and, to the horror of Mrs. Vincze, likes to show it to his friends. He also has a secondary shop in his Shore Acres, N. J. cot­tage, his place of retreat in winter or in summer. Here he takes pleasure in the care and growth of trees planted by him; makes houses for birds and feeds them. In his hours of withdrawal and recreation “Mishka”, his big air.dale dog is his ever present faithful companion. When it comes to eating, “Mishka’ must always come first with his master. But Dr. Vincze is essentially a Pastor of souls. His main concern is his congregation. He never hesitates to place anything or anyone second to the welfare of his congregation. Even his family must be sat­isfied with what his pastoral duties leave of him for them. It was not easy for them to get used to such a way of life, but it is to their credit that they did get used to it. Friends, this is your Pastor, through friendly eyes; the only kind of eyes through which the good can be seen and appreciated in any man. L.I.D. Dr. Charles Vincze, ívith Mrs. Vincze and their daughter Judith Dr. Vincze Károly főesperes, feleségével és Judith leányával to meet the requirements for the doctor’s degree in Sacred rheology at the State University in Debrecen, Hungary. He made an other visit to the land of his birth lor this and received his degree on December 3, 1931. In the meantime he also became the dean of the Eastern Classis of his denomination, the Free Magyar Reformed Church in America. In 1938 he made another visit to the old country, this time as the repre­sentative of his denomination at a congress of Magyar Reformed Christ­ians from all over the world. On this trip he was accompanied by his then twelve year old daughter. He meant it to be his lást trip to the land of the Magyars. Events since then did not change his mind on that score. In 1945 Dr. Vincze was elected to the highest office of his denomi­nation, to that of the Archdean. In 1947, his home seminary at Sárospa­tak, Hungary, conferred upon him the title of an honorary professor in Sacred Theology. This is the highest honor in the old school’s power to give, and Dr. Vincze was the first of its alumni ever to receive it. A he official presentation of the diploma took place in Dr. Vincze’s church on November 23, 19-18, by the president of the seminary, who at • the present happenst to be an exchange professor in the U.S.A. In Perth Amboy, Dr. Vincze became known as a civic minded ‘‘Lelkészi főjegyző előterjeszti a Sárospataki Református Theológiai Akadémia Tanári Karának — az Igazgatótanács nevében a főiskolai gond­noksága által is jóváhagyott — javaslatát DR. VINCZE RÁROLY-nak, az Amerikai Független Magyar Református Egyház főesperesének a theoló­giai akadémia tiszteletbeli tanárává választásáról.” A PERTH AMBOYI FÜGG. Dr. Újlaki Ferenc, Perth Amboy és Woodbridge városok képviselete és mások, a folya­matban lévő jelentkezés és az il­lendőség kivánalmai szerint. A programmon eddig Tiszt. Berta­lan Imre, Kedves Ilonka és Les­­kó Jolánka foglalnak helyet é­­nek- s dalszámokkal, Hack Imre zongorakisérete mellett. A siker érdekében az egész egyház taná­csot, az összes egyházi alakula­tokat és a barátok egy tisztes seregét felölelő bizottság mun­kálkodik.
