Budapest Abstract: In 2006-2007 spatio-temporal variations of chironomid assemblages of a small chalky watercourse were investigated in the hilly region of Balaton Upland. Sampling was 3-weekly carried out at 7 characteristically different sites along the whole length of the watercourse. The chironomid fauna of the stream was rich (40 taxa). Lowest number of species and number of individuals was found at the spring, while the highest at the middle reach. At the same time, Margalef s species richness decreased from the upper sections to lower sections. Based on multivariate analysis the different sections of the stream were characterized by different chironomid communities. Characteristic patterns in temporal changes were also detected. The spatio-temporal changes of the chironomid assemblages follow the natural hydrological and hydromorphological conditions of the stream. Moreover, effects of human activities were also detectable.
