Pre-flood situations are identified, the hydrological processes of past floods are analysed, the events are assessed, the discharges pumped into the Hortobágy-Berettyó and the flood waves travelling down the bed are analyses by means of a linear hydraulic model. The particulars include: Description of the natural conditions, the controls regulating the flow in the Hortobágy-Berettyó network, the drainage-flood control structures and reservoirs. The historical river floods and inundations by undrained runoff are reviewed. The hydrological analyses deals mainly with the development of the flood waves in 1999 and 2000. The meteorological and hydrological situation preceding and triggering the „abnormal" event, the evolution thereof and the passage of the flood wave are assessed. The factors involved are ranked according to importance. A special chapter is devoted to the HEC-RAS model, the calibration for the 1999 flood and the verification thereof for the 2000 flood.
