74 HIDROLÓGIAI KÖZLÖNY 1995. 75. ÉVF. 2. SZ^JVI Revlew of water affairs In the Netherlands promptod by thc flood »n the Rhine Goda, P. Abstract: River floods, high tides on the coast and surface subsidence in the wake of draining the polders reclaimed from the sea are the sources of inundation hazard in the Netherlands. The Dutch people and the gonvernment are in continuous quest of possibliy interdisciplinary answers to their water problems. Defences along the coastline and the rivers are financed fiilly, but sewage treatment up to 60 % from the state budget. State subsidies up to 50 % are granted to specific public-purpose hydraulic developments. The ring dykes built over the centuries originally to protect the polders form the main defences along the braided, meandering bed of the Rhine. Somé environmentalist "green" movements have objected successfully to improvements on the flood embankments. Responding promptly to the imminent disaster during the Rhine flood, the Dutch govemment has appropriated special funds amounting to several thousand millión Hungárián forints to launch without delay an embankment strengthening project scheduled for completion by the year 2000.
