Themostrelevantmessageof "Water2000" isthatallowanceiforthehistoricalbackground, thetechnico-economic environment and international experience is of paramount importance in the efforts iat improving water supply and water quality. Two water Utilities operating iin different natural environments, the South-West Water Utility Co. in England, and the North-Transdanubia Régiónál Water Works in Hungary are compared with special regard to the sources of supply, the structure of the distribution network and the system of quality monitoring. Notwithstanding the differences due to the natural environments, there are similarities in defining the important short-term objectives and measures of attaining these.
