Abstract: This paper was presented at the "Danube Navigation Conference" of the Austrian Society of Engineers held in Linz on October 13, 1992. The first Chapter describes the river development programme scheduled for 1993-1996, 1996-2005 and later by the competent ministry of the govemment designated by the Parliament elected for the period 1990-1994. The issues of flood control and water quality protection are outlined briefly in Chapters 2. and 3. In Chapter 4. the engineering vieos of the author are developed, elaborating on the technical-economic advantages of canalizing the Hungárián Danube. It is demonstrated that at the cost needed for maintaining the minimum navigation depth power generating dams can be built which sérve alsó as bridges, and store alsó water for benefical uses.
