Abstract: Imre Dégen, who as Undersecretary of State, was the president of the Hungárián National Water Authority and thus leader of the state agency responsible for the water affairs in in Hungary would be 80 years old in 1990. The same year marks the 25th and 20th anniversaries of the successful flood fighting operations on the Danube in 1965 and on the Tisza River in 1970, respectively. The leadership of Imre Dégen contributed greatly to these achievements. Not only an bituary is presented, the principles underlying Imre Dégen's water policy are alsó explained. The basis was the realization of the need to manage the water resources involving coordinated water resources management in regions, implementation and operation of the various water resources projects.
