(Ms) The water budget natural of Lake Balaton with a 593 km 2 large water surface and a catchment area of 51S5 km 2 has been studied extensively (Table I). An atteempt has been undertaken to supplement the results thereof by evaluating the impeacts of human activities in order ot assess the importance of these activities. The most important changes in the water budget are due to mine drainage (Fig. I ), but the effects of diversions for various water uses, of intensified agriculture and of changes in land use (urbanization, etc.) are also detectable. The impacts on the lake water budget of changes in the various economic activities from about 1960 to 1984 have been summarized in Table2. As will be perceived therefrom, the various impacts have largely compensated each other over the 25 years considered with a slight increase in the inflow to the lake. These conclusions of the analytical study are supported by the results of the hvdrological check (Fig. 2 and Table 3). The predictable changes in the human activities, and especially the reduced rates of mine drainage is likely to result in less inflow to the lake. By the end of the century this is expected to attain round 50 million m 3/year, amounting to 8 % of the present inflow.
