Schiller Abstract: As a result of the joint efforts of the hydrological institutions of the eight riparian countries of the Danube (D, A, CS, H, YU, BG, RO and SU), started in 1970, the German version of the Hydrological Monograph of the Danube Basin has been published in 1986 (RZdD, 1986). The Russian version of the Monograph as well as its shortened, four-language version, sponsored by the UNESCO, are expected to be published in 1987. In this paper, the German editor of the Monograph first describes the structure of the Monograph and then shows detailes selected from Chapters I. and II. Chapter I. is a general description of the physico-geographical and water management conditions of the Danube Basin: topography (Fig. 1), geology, climate, runoff regime (Figs. 2 and 3, Table 2), stream density, river morphology. Particularly numerous graphs and tables are selected from Chapter II, characterizing the hydrologic regime of the Dunube and her major tributaries: the system of gauging stations (Fig. 1, Table 1), water stages (Fig. 2), flow discharges (Figs. 4 and 5), floods (Figs. 6., 7 and 8., Table 3.) and hydrologic droughts (Figs. 9. and 10., Table 4.). The compilation of the water balances both for the sub-basins and national areas (Table 5.) of the Danube Basin, was a contribution of the Hungarian institute VITUKI to the Monograph. Hence, no detaliled description of Chapter III. (Water Balance) is given in this paper; only reference is made to the relevant Hungarian literature (Domokos, Sass, 1985; Sass, Domokos, 1986). Az építőmérnöki oklevelet a Müncheni Műszaki Egyetemen 1961-ben szerezte meg, a „Vízépítés ós vízgazdálkodás" tárgyú államigazgatási államvizsgát 1963-ban tette le. Pályájának kezdetén az Amberg-i ós az Ansbach-i Vízgazdálkodási Hivatalban dolgozott. 1967-től 1973-ig a Bajor Belügyminisztérium Legfelsőbb Építésügyi Hatóságában a bajorországi nagy folyók vízépítési munkáinak előadója volt. 1973 óta a Bajor Vízgazdálkodási Hivatalban dolgozik. Először a bajor Duna-szakaszon épülő vízlépcsőkkel kapcsolatos hidrológiai vizsgálatokat végzett. 1978 óta a Hivatal „Felszíni vizek hidrológiája és árvízjelző szolgálat" elnevezésű osztályának a vezetője. A nemzetközi együttműködésben készült DunaMonográfia szerkesztése ós 1986. évi megjelentetése elsősorban az ő érdeme. HEINZ SCHILLER
