Development Programme of Water Supply and Sewerage for the 7 th Five- Year Plan M. Varga Abstract: The end of the year 1985 marked the termination of the 6th five-year plan period and the introduction of the new medium-range plan. In compliance with the planning policy of the national economy, the plan of the water sector was compiled for the 7th five-year period. Thus: — The basic policies were formulated. — Several alternative draft plans were compiled from which the final version fitting best to the economic potential of the country was selected. After consultations with the competent political and administration authorities, the 7th five-year plan of the national economy and as part there of the medium range plan of water management was approved of by Parliament. — Following this decision the regional plans of water management were compiled, finalizing the plans of the district water authorities and companies. The present appraisal has the objective of providing information to the representatives of water supply and sewerage interests about the development objectives in these domains in order to promote also by the ensuing public debate the successful implementation of the 7tli five-year plan of water utility development. The weight and development opportunities of the watersupply-sewerage branch within the water sector is clearly reflected by the fact that over one-half of the 190 thousand million HUF fixed assets of the sector is allocated to this branch, which also employs the majority of the sector's personnel. Round three-quarters of the development funds available to the sector have been devoted over the past years to water and sewer utility projects. This trend is expected to prevail also during the period up to 1990. Among the development objectives included in the 7th five-year plan of the water sector, water supply, sewerage and sewage treatment occupy positions of outstanding importance. In the interest of improving utility water supply, the capacity of waterworks will be expanded by round 600 million m 3/day, partly by expanding the existing facilities, partly by providing piped water to around 500 thousand people. By the end of the plan period utility water will be available to 89—90% of the population. Under the water supply programme of communities with public health hazard, water-works will be built in 280 communities. In the domain of severage treatment the possibilites are still limited. Nevertheless, the addition of round 500 thousand m 3/day of treatment capacity has been envisaged, and the percentage of population living in sewered areas will attain 51. For attaining the capacity increases outlined above in water supply and sewerage a number of major problems will have to be solved at considerable efforts. These development objectives have been defined with due regard to the present situation of the economy and for attaining these increased reliance has to be made on the cooperation, initiatives of those working in these domains to explore now ways of improving officiency of saving costs and enchancing benefits. A BME Építőmérnöki Karán végzett 1967-ben. 1971-ben Vízellátás-Csatornázás egészségügyi szakmérnöki oklevelet kapott. 1985-ben doktorált a „Magyarország csatornázási koncepciója, különös tekintettel ez energiatakarékosságra" témaköri! ós című disszertációjával. Mérnöki pályáját 1967-ben kezdte a Közép-dunántúli Vízügyi Igazgatóságnál. 1974-ben az Igazgatóság igazgatóhelyettes főmérnökévé nevezték ki. 1979-ben az Észak-dunántúli Vízügyi Igazgatóság vezetőjévé nevezték ki. Ez időszakban fő területe a Bős-Nagymarosi Vízlépcső Rendszer munkára való felkészülés volt. 1982-ben a Minisztertanács az Országos Vízügyi Hivatal elnökhelyettesévé nevezte ki. 1985-ben a Magyar Hidrológiai Társaság alelnökóvó választották.
