Hidrológiai Közlöny 1974. 3—4. sz. 148 the plan is composed. A logical consequence thereof is that the outlines of water management development extend beyond the horizons observed in planning socio-economic processes. The potential bands of evolution, as well as the critical points :in socioeconomic development must be identified which may bring about a change in the development trend of water management. I. Mátrai Among the multi-purpose large water projects the development history of river barrages is of special interest, especially in connection with the utilization of the Rhine, the Rhone, the Danube and the Tisza River. The formulation of the basic design ideas of these structures was considerably influenced by the continuously changing priorites of the various sectorial demands, as well as by the service life of the projects. Whereas river barrages are constructed for 80 to 100 years, many of the important parameters cannot be predicted with the desired reliability for periods longer than 15 to 20 years. This circumstance makes circumspect planning essential, in the course of which the analysis must be extended to the entire range of influence, with due allowance for the economic stimulus, expansive, infrastructure promoting effect of river barrages. B. Hock Considering the coming half century, computations based on diverse assumptions have revealed the necessity of enlarging the capacity of effluent treatment facilities at a rate substantially higher than that of development in the national economy in general. A recurring function in long-term planning must be in this respect the survey of state and the preparation of forecasts. S. Ress Commenting on the paper by Mrs. Dr. L. Csanády it is considered advisable to expand slightly the methodology of water demand forecasting, among others by including predictions on the need for water, the substitutive and complementary character of water as a factor of production, and further research on the relationship between the realistic limit of prognoses and the extent of uncertainty. Finally, regardless of the difficulties mentioned it would be desirable to promote with added emphasis research into the distribution of water demands in terms of natural and economic conditions, as well as into the parameters characterizing the distribution of demands. L. Tirvol The problem caused by the gas content of water in the operation of wells and water works in the SouthPlains seems to warrant greater attention. In the interest of long-term regional planning a better understanding would be essential of the vertical position of diverse gases, of the gas: water ratio along depth and of the variations occurring therein. The wells of the observation network to be drilled in areas of gaseous aquifers must be drilled with special care to permit gas analyses to be performed. For any correct interpretation of the data observed in these, regular examinations must be continued on the productive wells at water works as well. J. Békési The answers to the comments and remarks can be divided into three groups. To reflect in brief on the two questions by Mr. A. Vajda, I am in the position to announce that the text of the first three lectures will be published in English in the Journal of Hydrology. Diversion of Danube water to the Tisza Valley over the Danube —Tisza Canal is taken into consideration in the long-term plans. Opportunity should be found for direct informative conversation on this subject. The contributions classified into the second group supplement in their majority the papers submitted, or offer suggestions promoting the use, or emphasizing special aspects of the papers. Others describe investigations contributing to the more accurate justification and improvement of further long-term planning. The third group of comments and remarks imposes obligations on the planning organziation in presenting interesting ideas and recommendations for the further development of long-term planning work, by indicating its trend, drawing also on futurology. At the end of this technical session, appreciation must be expressed to the authors for their work and to the contributors for their active participation in the discussion. It is my obligation to reflect on the benevolent comments by the participants from friendly countries. In full agreement with our own ideas the establishment of relations is advocated by them both in long-term planning and in the perfection, improvement of advanced methods. Concerted efforts will enable us to proceed with greater strides and at higher efficiency, obtaining familiarity with our respective long-term planning objectives. In this way cooperation in the Danube Basin and the solution of water management problems will become possible by the mutual agreement and in the interest of the countries sharing the common catchment.
