New Instruments l'or Hydraulic Investigations «n the Sitc By L. Kránicz, L. Muszkalay, ö. Starosolszky There are considerable differences both in means and rnethods between hydraulic measurements on the site and in the laboratory. A great obstaele to modernization is the lack of an eleetrical network. At the Research Institute for Water Resources various instruraents have been developed for measurements at the site, observing the specific demands of the various measurements, the aim of whieh is to ensure the hydraulic comparison of model investigations and the completed structure. Somé of the more important types of the lately developed instruments are dealt with here. For increasing the accuracy of velocity measurement — especially of turbine acceptance tests — a new jlow-meter has been developed by L. Muszkalay (III. 1) whicli_responds to lower velocities than the types hitherto used, its component measuring ability is slightly improved (Fig. 1) and is of a higher accuracy. For measuring the direction and magnitude of velocity a new instrument has been constructed by L. Muszkalay and L. Kránicz which is produced in two types for use from the rod (Ills. 2 and 3) and írom bifilar suspension (111. 4). The horizontal and verticai deviation of the velocity vector from the direction normál to the cross section is indicated or recorded, and the revolutions of the current meter are signalled electromeehanically. For recording slowly changing jlow an oscillatingvane flow meter (Fig. 2) has been developed which reeords without a supply network the magnitude and sense of velocity, the latest type even the direction thereof, from four different depths without interruption for about 1 month. The differential gear head recorder is of great importance primarily in the measuring structures used in irrigation and in water resources management. Its simple design makes it especially suited for recording small differential water levels (IU. 6). p'or recording rapid changes in the water level, such as various motion phenomena an electromechanical deviee has been constructed by L. Kránicz, which is powered by a battery, or from the mains and operates either as a permanent, or portable instrument with different chart speeds. (In Fig. 3 it is installed in combination with an anemometer.)
