Dear Grandma and Grandpa, C~7] fter spending some wonderful days in Gyöngyös we are sending to you our best wishes from JL the Mátra mountains, 'the top of Hungary’. The landscape is spectacular and the windows of our room overlook the surrounding mountains in bloom with thousands of vibrant colours. We are spending most of our time touring. We are enjoying the crystal-clear air fresh, listening to the twittering of the birds and the gurgling of tiny brooks. What the children like most is picking wild flowers, colourful leaves, mushrooms, and nice pebbles we find while roaming about in the woods. All the four seasons here have something exciting to offer. It would be nice to spend some beautiful days here skiing, sledging and having fun in the winter. We have already explored where the best ski-runs are. During our trips we always keep our eyes open for many of the fascinating sights in the area. We visited a fulling-mill, the exhibition of „palots” dolls in Mátrafüred, had a nice walk among the romantic ruins of the „Bene” Castle and also spent some unforgettable hours in the „Church of Three Villages” in Mátraszentimre. The other day we all went boating after the children had fed the ducks at lake Sás. Later, at the end of a nice walk around Mátraháza, we walked up „Kékestető”, to the top of Hungary. From the TV-tower a magnificiant view opened before our eyes and then we realized that only the birds get a more thrilling view of the picturesque landscape. The next few days we will spend wandering through the friendly little villages at the foot of the Mátra mountains, which give so much character to the area. We will visit the ..Palots” house, the „Fancy" stable and the coach museum in Parád, the medieval castle in Kisnána and the country museum in Markaz. Fortunately, we have taken grandpa's advice to take our fishing tackle with us. Now we can put our fishing skills to the test at the lakes in Markaz and Domoszló. We can also hardly wait to go wine-tasting in the finest cellars of Nagyréde and Gyöngyöstarján to get a taste of the famous wines of the region, not to mention the pleasures the spa in Mátraderecske offers to us. (\f~ach den in Gyöngyös verbrachten schönen Tagen grüssen wir Euch vom „Dach Ungarns", aus dem Mátra-Gebirge herzlichst. Die Landschaft ist wunderbar, aus unseren Fenstern haben wir eine schöne Aussicht auf das in vielen Farben spielendes Gebirgeland. Die Zeit vergeht vor allem mit Ausflügen, wir geniessen die klare, gesunde Luft, hören das Gezwitscher der Vögel und das Geplätscher der kleinen Bergbache an. Die Kinder sammeln leidenschaftlich: Heidenblumen, bunte Blätter, Pilze, Schnecken, schöne Kieselsteine - ihnen ist alles interessant, was wir unterwegs finden. Ich glaube, hier hat jede Jahreszeit eine Kuriosität. Es wäre schön hier auch im Winter einige Tage zu verbringen. Wir haben schon entdeckt, wo die besten Rodel- und Schibahnen zu finden sind. Unsere Ausflüge sind immer auf interessante Zielpunkte gerichtet. So haben wir die berühmte Mühle und die Palöcer Puppenausstellung in Mátrafüred. die „Kirche von drei Dorfen” in Mátraszentimre besucht, haben eine romantische Wanderung bei den Ruinen von Benevár gemacht. Nachdem die Kinder die Enten im Sás-see gefüttert hatten, machten wir eine Bootsfahrt. Nach einer angenehmen Wanderung von Mátraháza standen wir auf der höchsten Spitze Ungarns, auf der „Kékes”. Vom Aussichtsturm aus hat man eine wunderbare Aussicht: man denkt gleich daran: schöneres können nur die Vögel sehen. In den nächsten Tagen besuchen wir die am Fusse des Gebirges liegenden kleinen Gemeinden. Zielpunkte sind: das Palöchaus. der Cifra-Stall und das Kutschenmuseum in Parád, die Burg aus dem Mittelalter in Kisnána, das Landhaus und der See in Markaz. Hier oder beim See in Domoszló versuchen wir Fisch zu fangen. Zum Glück haben wir Opas Rat gefolgt, wir haben die Angelgeräte mit. Wir sind schon neugierig, wie uns die berühmten Mátraer Weine schmecken werden, so machen wir in Nagyréde und Gyöngyöstarján eine Weinprobe. Es folgt dann eine Ruhepause im angenehmen Strandbad von Mátraderecske. Diese wunderschöne, unvergessliche Landschaft gefällt uns sehr, wir planen schon eine baldige Wiederkehr - wir hoffen, mit Euch zusammen. Viele herzliche Grüsse Klaudia, Gerd und die Kinder 1.
