The exhibits include findings from the early Arpád-period and peculiar 13th- 14th century Kisnána tomb-stones, discovered at Benevár, Mátrafüred, Turkish charters and weapons, numerous historical objects, witnessed many important events and relics of viti- and viniculture as well as pottery, which used to be so typical . The relics of the great fire of 1917 in Gyöngyös, photographs, melted bottles, charred pieces of wood and worn fire extinguishers have still an astonishing effect among objects and devices, showing the daily life suggesting wealth of a provincial town. In the last room the relics of schools with a prominent past in Gyöngyös are displayed. On the first floor of the historical building we can see the development of the Mátra hills and their wildlife, as well as exhibitions, showing the hunting history of the region. The first rooms house a dazzling exhibition of minerals: colorful agates, different opals from the south of the Mátra, wonderful crystals of calcite, quartz, rich in shape, lilac amethyst, ores, such as dark, metallic galena, wurzite, glittering golden pyrite and marcasite. Among the petrified plant and animal fossils, leaf-prints, snails and shells, unique in our country, the intact skeleton of a mammoth from Mátraderecske is displayed in a separate room. The Mátra Reserve Area and the Mátra Region show a rich collection of plants, insects and birds. Dioramas make acquaintance with the wildlife of the woods even more enjoyable, deer, boar, roe-deer, migrating birds and reptiles, native in the Mátra, are shown with the background of changing seasons. Beside costumes from Nógrád and Heves, the ethnographic culture of Borsod and Gömör counties can also be observed. The collection of folklore artist Mrs. Magda Mészáros Szakács is on display in the second room. The outstanding pieces of the collection that come from over 100 settlements are woven textiles and tent-covers. The Museum of Ethnography declared the collection protected.
