EGRI BIKAVÉR The Egri Bikavér, blended of wines of several blue grapes, is in all probability the best-known red wine of Hungary. About the origin of its name there is no precise information available. Some want to connect the name with the defenders of Eger fighting heroically with the Turks, in writ­ten documents the name “Bikavér”, as this strong red wine from Eger is called, has only been used since 1851. In that period the diffe­rent blue grapes were harvested at the same time, and then they we­re pressed (in fact, trod­den) and fermented on their own skin in wood­en barrels. The making of the mo­re noble variety of Egri Bikavér is connected to the name of Jenő Grö­ber.
