Dear Wine-Loving Geests! Hungarians who love their country and are interested in her values will definitely come to Eger several times in their life. First they will probably come here on a class trip from school to become imbued with the special atmosphere and spectacle described by Géza Gárdonyi in his immortal masterpiece, The Eclipse of the Crescent Moon. As we know, the legend about the origin of the name “Bikavér” (Bull’s Blood) comes from the Turks believing that the red wine the defenders drank was the “blood of bulls”, and that this was the source of strength of the brave Eger warriors who achieved glorious victory over the Turks. Captain István Dobó and his soldiers have inscribed their names upon the pages of history and in our hearts. The young and the grown-up will come to visit again, and on this occasion they will try the outstanding wines of the region, too. The historic past of Eger is entwined with the grape and wine culture of the area. Eger wines have always meant a little miracle to me. As the result of hard work, these wines have achieved acknowledgement for our town not just in Hungary but also throughout the world. They speak highly of the diligence and expertise of the wine makers. We, the people of Eger, are very proud of our wines, and will do everything to keep this grape and wine culture flourishing and growing. Let’s raise our glasses to this in Eger! 3
