History Eger is one of the most beautiful baroque towns in the country. Its citizens con be rightly proud of their glorious historical past and the precious sites. It got the title 'the town of patriotism' after 1552 when István Dobó the captain of the fortress and his handful of troops resisted the attacks of the four times greater Turkish army for more than one month. The glory of the Hungarian defenders is depicted in the famous romantic novel, The Eclipse of the Crescent Moon by Géza Gárdonyi (1863 1922). Eger is also the town of thermal boths, students and wine. The excellent quality red and white wines of the famous historical wine region are sold in hundreds of years old cellars. The second largest church of Hungary with the largest organ of the country is in Eszterházy Square. Opposite that we can find the late baroque Lyceum (i Eszterházy Square), that is today the teachers' training college. On its first floor there is the Ecclesiastical library, one of the nicest libraries of the country with fine wood carvings, beautiful frescoes and 160 OOO books. In the Lyceum tower the first astronomical museum, the Specula Observatory can be found. The most valuable machinery in the observatory with the equipment of 1776 is the periscope, that projects a living picture of the town onto a white table in a dark room. The lovely buildings of Kossuth Lajos street are baroque, Louis XVI-style and rococo style palaces: the Vice Provost's Palace (no.4), the Provost's Palace (no.16), the house of Wagner Prebend (no 6.), the Fransiscan church and monastery (no 14) and one of the oldest buildings of the town, the Buttlrr House (no 26). The amazing gateway of the county hall (no 9) bears the exceptionally fine works of the smith, Henrik Fazola. The building of the past county prison is today used as archives and we can find the historical exhibition of Heves County and Eger in the 18-19th century and also the Sports museum here. The medieval Eger fortress (1 Vár) is a triumphant fortress. 11 tourist
