The Heritage of the Past The Heritage of the Past Where the vast trackless forests of the Bükks and the Mátras meet, St István established the Eger bishopric. It was the fire that illuminated the darkness of paganism, and also cast light on the contour of the cross forever preaching victory to the wavering soul. At the russety light of the blazing fire shine the noble profiles of Eger bishops who for centuries served the cause of Hungarian education, more important than anything. We can see Klétus, later bishop of Eger, who drafted the Golden Bull in 1222; Tamás Bakócz, a renaissance prelate, the great friend of arts, who inscribed his name upon the pages of history.
