The Heritage of the Past 1 at the Council of Nagyszombat, in 1561, and at the same time he ordained all parish priests to keep a schoolmaster for their village; or the face of Antal Verancsics, who founded the first school of higher education. We can see István Telekesy, who organized the Eger Seminary, Ferenc Barkóczy, who opened a philosophical school. But we have to linger longest with Count Károly Eszterházy, who had the famous Eger Lyceum built, who cultivated the thought of Eger University, and who developed Eger with artistic relics to be one of the most beautiful towns in Hungary during the 36 years of his being a bishop. With twenty years of untiring work, he built the greatest Hungarian building of the 18 century, the Eger Lyceum. A genuine art expert and patron, he hired artist for a lifetime, and they worked along with his taste and instructions. But János László Pyrker also claims a place in the distinguished line of great names. He set up the first Hungarian-tongued teachers’ training college, and had the second biggest church in Hungary built.
