Age of the users: Users were mainly in the age-group 18-24 years. The percentages of 18-24 year-olds using the collections were ­Town Libraries: 30.8% (April); 35.4% (October) County Libraries: 38.1% (April; 43.1% (October) Professions of the users: University/college students: 36.8% (April); 58.1% (October) Teachers: 9.7% (April); 17.5% (October) Professors/lecturers using the Town Libraries 0.6% (April); 2.4% (October) Professors/lecturers using the County Libraries: 1.2% (April); 2.1% (October) Reasons for using the local studies collections: The most popular reason for using the collections was to research the writing of dissertations/scientific studies: Town Libraries: 46% County Libraries: 63% Subjects for research: In both Town and County Libraries the main subjects for research were: Local history of the locality: 27.8% (April); 32.1% (October) The natural environment: 25.1% (April); 21.6% (October) The least popular subjects for research were: Agricultural, commercial and industrial topics: 1.4% (April); 0.5% (October) [combined subject totals] Enquiries: Nearly 50% of enquiries in both Town and County Libraries required the librarians to find answers to specific questions. Ways of accessing local studies information: Users preferred traditional hard copy sources, and, in both Town and County Libraries, considered the assistance of a librarian of prime importance. Assistance from a librarian: 56.2% (April); 54.3% (October) Computerised catalogues: 24.4% (April); 36.4% (October) Online catalogues: 0.8% 9April); 0.9% (October) Internet: 0.9% (April); 0.6% (October) The use of press cuttings as an information source was placed fourth in the surveys completed in the Town Libraries and only fifth in the County Libraries. 71
