No solution has <— been arrived at and reports have been made. The theatre was unsuccessful in ob- taining credit and the Exchequer did nőt succeed in making the Jurta Theatre initiate bankruptcy proceedings against itself. When the negotiations broke down the Jurts turnéd to the Prime Minister Miklós Németh in a letter, they asked fór guarantees of state credit because the Budapest Bank will nőt accept the guaranty which a West Germán bank has offered. The company at the Jurta were gladdened and believed that they would récéivé a favourable answer when A mai nap ("Today0), a new aftemoon paper, wrote that the theatre’s problems would soon be solved and its situation rectified. Bút their joy was short-lived as the news was false. The theatre did récéivé a reply, bút nőt from the head of government, bút fromtheir previous negotiating partner, the Exchequer. "I have to inform you - writes the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Dr Miklós Villányi - that the President of the Council of Ministers agrees with my position, that this request fór credit does nőt justify a state guarantee." On February 28th a 30 member Social Protectorate was formed to savé the Jurta Theatre, the members of which are important figures in Hungárián cultural and political life, such as Ferenc Bessenyei, István Eörsi, Árpád Göncz, Aliz Halda, Gyula Hernádi, Miklós Jancsó, Zoltán Király, György Konrád, Erzsébet Nagy, László Rajk, Ottília Solt, Tibor Szervátius, Miklós Vásárhelyi and Károly Vigh. Their announcement which was sent to the nation and Hungarians living in the West says: "Let us savé the Jurta Theatre which is threatened with liquidation, the home of democracyi". The Jurta plans to hold a mass demonstration on March áth, supported by 21 independent organisations. The Hungárián papers did nőt publish the protest announcement, just as they omitted to publish the 12 points in the independent organisations’ announcement of the March 15th celebrations. Press freedom has its limits: two weeks ago the paper Reform had to pulp one of its already printed sheets. On the 2nd of March the Jurta Theatre sent an announcement to the Hungárián News Agency. It said that it would organise a demonstration on April 20th on Vörösmarty Square and in front of the Ministry of Culture if its case has nőt been resolved by then.
