On Thursday Januray 12th three provinciái towns held such meetings. In Debrecen the Peoples Patriotic Front’s Town Committee conducted round-table discussions with spokespeople from the Young Democrats Alliance, the Young Communist League, the Hungárián Democratic Fórum, the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party and the Free Democrats Alliance. In Békéscsaba the local Party committee invited the FIDESZ,the Hungárián Democratic Fórum, the Free Democrats Alliance and the Network fór Free Initiatives to a debate. In Kecskemét József Ballai the editor of the paper "Petőfi’s Nation" led a debate in the Ferenc Erdei Cultural Centre with Hungárián Democratic Fórum, the Free Democrats Alliance and the Network fór Free Initiatives, in which there was an open exchange of ideas with representatives from Party Headquarters. The meeting aroused great interest although only 350 were able to get intő the hall. The Hungárián Democratic Fórum was represented by István Csurka and the writer Sándor Lezsák, Party Headquarters by László Tu« nyögi and József Csikós, the Free Democrats Alliance by the economist Pál Juhász, the sociologist Bálint Magyar and the histórián Miklós Szabó, the Network fór Free Initiatives by the literary histórián Iván Bába. The debate centred on the relations between the authorities and independent organisations; representatives of the latter groups stressed that they would only enter talks with the Party’s reform wing. On January 14th in the editorial Office of the weekly paper Reform which is half owned by the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party, Károly Alexa, Zoltán Brády, Imre Furmann, György Gadó, János Kenedi, Ferenc Kőszeg, Tamás Miklós, Jenő Nagy, Miklós Vásárhelyi and others debated on behalf of Beszélő (The Talker), Demokrata. Hitel (Belief), Kapu (Gate), Magyar Zsidó (Hungárián Jew), Máshonnan Beszélő (Talker from Another Piacé), Medvetánc (Bear Dance), Új Tükör (New Mirror) and two other provinciái magazines. They declared that they would support each other if they were suppressed by the authorities and would establish a faction in the joumalists unión, a common archive and information network.
