Twenty years ago Jan Pall&ch, a humán torch of despair, immolated himself on Prague * s Wer£e?1asSquare. Despotism and violence could nőt create an exclusive reign of terror either at that time or in this. Today water cannons, tear gas and truncheons were on show once more in Prague. The Czechoslovak police state’s helmeted, shielded and heroic protecters took possession ofWaicealasSquare and its surrounds with a show of great force. Bút the appearance and presence of the protesters revealed beyond question that the Street does nőt belong to those who only know how to take possession of it with violence and force bút to those who are the equal and legal owners of the common territory of Prague and Budapest. We believe it is necessary to protest against the brutal infringement of freedom rights in Czechoslovakia and demand the immediate release of all those arrested. No more peaceful students or peaceful countries must be immolated. Budapest 10 pm, January 15th, 1989.
