Ferenc Bessenyei read out a poem by Gyula Illyés and appearances were made by György Bánffy, János Bródy, István Bubik, Marika Oszwald, András Nagy-Bandó and a number of other vell-known actors and singers. Members of the Free Románia organisation uere in the audience. At the end of the evening Tamás Kis, the secretary of the Jurta Theatre, read out an appeal from the theatre company which was issued especially fór this occasion, The appeal which was addressed to the nations of the world, the Hungárián demo- cratic forces and the Hungárián govemment concems the issue of direct and in- direct responsibility fór the existence of the Geaupescu dictatorship. It criti- cises the Hungárián government fór its decades of silence and fór its two-faced behaviour and demands that the government tums to the United Nations on Transyl- vania’s behalf and asks fór economic, communication and other embargoes against the Geau^escu régimé, publicity about the atrocities which occur on the Hungarian- Romanian bordér and fór political status to be given to all Románián refugees. "We ask all the citizens of our nation to light a candle in their homes on Christmas Eve fór all our brothers and sisters and fór those who languish in Ceaugescu’s jails" - so the appeal finishes. The Transylvanian evening was broad- cast by Hungárián Television on the same evening. At the beginning of January a new bankruptcy law will come intő existence, this will increase the difficulties of the Jurta Theatre. The theatre’s struggle was mentioned by Elemér Hankiss,.speaking on behalf of the New March Front, in today’s edition of Magyar Nemzet ("Hungárián Nation"). The theatre has been pút up fór sale and the Ministry of Culture and the Hungárián Media Company have come forward as buyers. West Germán, Austrian and American interest has alsó been shown in it and a Germán bank has offered to lend the theatre one millión two hundred thousand marks at a low rate of interest.
