"We are citizens of such a country - it says - whose political leaders submitted to the Brezhnev Soviet dictatorship, and this led to the military invasion of Czechoslovakia. This action suppressed the hope that socialism alsó has a humán face and made friendship between East-Central European nations impossible fór many years. Today we are still ashamed that we did nőt dare at that time to express our feelings of despair and solidarity clearly and loudly." The declaration states that recently the Soviet Union and more and more of its allies have acknowledged that the 1968 invasion was contrary to their own interests and that after admitting the failure of the Afghanistan military adventure a sub- sequent re-evaluation of the aggression in Czechoslovakia will take piacé. "As far as Hungary is concemed - continues the declaration - the new Party leadership con- demns the checking and stopping of the 1968 economic reforms and even believes it is the chief reason fór its own economic problems. The time has come to follow this up in a logical way by condemning the intervention in Czechoslovakia as the chief foreign political reason fór this process. We are nőt prophets. We do nőt know whether the Soviet or Hungárián leaders will come to this conclusion. Bút we would like to express our solidarity independent of their deliberations. Our last words concem the admiration and respect which your self-sacrificing work stirred in us - finishes the declaration signed by 180 Hungárián citizens on the 20th anniversary of the military invasion of Czechoslovakia. 3 Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged.
