These followed the replacement in Kazakhstan of the Party First Secretary of Kazakh origin with a Russian official. After order had been restored, 271 students were expelled from the university and 800 from the Komsomol. K. Riskulbekov, a construction engineering student, was charged with the murder of a voluntary policeman, and was sentenced to death. 41 membrs of the Hungárián Democratic Opposition have now sent a telegram from Budapest to the President of the Supreme Soviet Praesidium of the Soviet Union and the First Secretary of the Soviet Party asking fór a reprieve fór Riskulbekov. The telegram ran as follows: Dear Mr. Gromyko and Mr. Gorbachev, We ask you to exercise your right of pardon and spare the life of K. Riskulbekov, the Kazakh student who has been sentenced to death. Hungárián public opinion would welcome this as a humán decision that would promote understanding between nations.
