278 Szűcs Ernő: A „zsuzsi” Debrecen Városi Gazdasági Vasút... The forest train of Debrecen called Zsuzsi Ernő Szűcs The author writes about the history of Zsuzsi beloved by the people of Debrecen. This narrow-gauge railway /0,95m/ was brought about by the town in the period of 1881 and 1882 to transport the timber from the forest lying east and south of Debrecen to its depot. The enterprenaurs /Kopf and Steinberger/ transplanted their factory from Bosnia, later it went over into the town’s proprietorship and then from 1923 there was a passenger traffic on the train, too. The people of the forest steppe provided constantly for the town with fresh milk, dairy- products, eggs and poultry. It was a profitable economic system for themselves and provided an excellent board for Debrecen. An industrial unit was built by the town where, besides the freight trains, rail-cars were made not only for their own line but for order, too. After 1927 they tried to increase the tourist traffic. Next to the railway line the Vásáry Rest House was built, in which it had a hotel, too. There was a woodworking plant there, as well. It was a great attention to the learning of the workers. It was a pity that the Minister of Transport, György Csanádi gave the Zsuzsi train to the hand of Hungarian State Railways /MÁV/ in 1973, while from the 49km-railway remained altogether only 16,6km. The conclusion is that the wood became more expensive, the young ones could not go to study by train from the farms and the supplying of the town with food became worse. Nowadays the fans try to support the train with a lot of sacrifice /Zsuzsi Circle of friends/, the 127-year-old favourite called Zsuzsi.
