Gyerőfi János’s account about the Transylvanian war-tax from 1597-1598 Bogdándi Zsolt The war tax used in the Transylvanian state during the XVIth and XVIlth centuries has been called subsidium or contributio. Entering among the Christians in the long war, which lasted almost 15 years, caused the taxes to rise, otherwise the pre- modern state couldn’t have sustained the increased war-effort. At the beginning the managers of these taxes were the orders of the Principality, but after the proeminent personalities of the so-called Turkish party have perished (1594), the prince named his faithfull functionaries to manage the taxes. The published document contains the income and the expenses made by Gyerőfi János, magister stipendiarum between 1597-1598. The main conclusion of the text is that troups of the principality were rarely paid.
