BIHAR COUNTY IN THE EARLY 18th CENTURY (1701-1703)

The introductory study sheds new light on the Kuruc conspiracy of Diószeg. It demonstrates how the tax burdens of the populations increased to unbearable levels after the outbreak of the Spanish War of Succession (financing the costs of conscription and recruitment, supplies for the recruits). A sign of final desperation was that Hungarian soldiers deserted and escaped home not only from the troops leaving for abroad, but also from the regiments stationed in Italy and Bavaria.

In the list of sources compiled one can find the most important documents of the general assembly of Bihar County in the period between 29 September 1701 and 23 June 1703. The Latin texts were translated into Hungarian by the since deceased retired director of the Hajdű-Bihar County Archives, Dr. György Komoróczy.
