Miklós Bényei Unpublished letters to Lajos Kossuth by Imre Gáspár, a journalist in Debrecen During the eighties of the nineteenth century Kossuth's cult entered into a new stage. An active part in he formation of this cult was taken by a young, talented journalist, Imre Gáspár (1854-1910), who arrived in the city in spring 1883. As editor of the opposition newspaper, Debreczen, he wrote a number of articles and several poems on Lajos Kossuth, whom he deeply respected, and who was regarded as a symbolic personality of national independence. The details of Gáspár's activities in Debrecen have not been revealed yet, neither has historical research dealt with his efforts made towards the enhancement of Kossuth's cult. Found in the legacy of the great statesman were two letters addressed to him by Imre Gáspár from the city of the “civic citizens”. On 12lh June Gáspár asked for Kossuth's advice concerning the rearrangement of the ranks of the Independence Party after its failure in the elections. However, he did not receive any reply. On 3^ October he informed the ex-regent that, on the occasion of the 20lh anniversary of the existence of his newspaper, he inserted selected citations from Kossuth's works on the front page of the jubilee issue. In the meantime he composed greeting telegrams for the name-day of the "Hermit in Turin". Later he raised great publicity with the purpose of awarding the title "Honorary Citizen" to Kossuth who was threatened by the status of a displaced person.
