Tamás Kosutány and the National Agrochemistry at the Turn of the Century Béla Surányi The second half of the last century was an abundant period in talented persons in our national science history. Bourgeois development of the nation endavoured to achieve excellent position in the field of science too. Not only the basic- but also the applied sciences closed up to the leading European Workshops of that time. Many branches of different sciences were born in the last century, among them agrochemistry that newly bom out of the interaction of agriculture and chemistry. In its Knowledge formation Hungarian scientists also took a great deal among them. Tamás Kosutány, the character of this paper, exerted his activity in a relatively peaceful period of the Hungarian History. The ascending economic situation, the consolidated political life helped in the development of the capabilities of the talented. The Hungarian agricultural production also tried to keep up in the marketing competition; only excellent quality products could be brought to the international markets. To achieve this goal it was inevitable to develop and establish the scientific background of the production. What presently means biology for the 20th century that was chemistry for the last century and its penetration into farming opened up a new facet by throwing spotlight on the so far intuitive, traditional agricultural knowledge. Great progress was achieved in the field of nutritive absorption of plants and crops and fermentation, as well as development of the industrial processing technologies of many different agricultural branches, etc. But it was equally important that assessment of the chemical composition of food-industrial staffs became available giving a firm background for the qualification of the foodstuff products. Hungarian agrochemistry won a high reputation during these works and its representative scientists became appreciated members of the international society. Tamás Kosutány was one of the great stature people who contributed to the development of agrochemistry. Обуржуазивающаяся нация старалась завоевать себе достойное место в области наук. Примкнули к европейским мастерским — которые представляли собой технику мирового уровня — не только фундаментальные, но и прикладные отрасли наук. В прошлом столетии качалась колыбель многих наук. К ним относится рожденная из взаимодействия сельского хозяйства и химии новая отрасль науки — агрохимия. В формировании ее запаса знаний участвовали и венгерские ученые, в том числе и выступающий в этой статье Тамаш Кошу- тань, чей жизненный путь и научное творчество попало на сравнительно мирный период венгерской истории. Поднимающася экономика, консолидированная политическая жизнь благоприятствовали развертыванию талантов. Венгерское сельское хозяйство должно было удержаться в рыночном конкурировании, на международной арене оно могло явиться только с товарами безукоризненного качества. Для этого нужно было создать научные основы экономики. Химия для XIX века значила то же самое, что и биология для XX века, и внедрение ее в экономику по новому осветило сельскохозяйственные знания, которые передавались по традициям и основывались лишь на интуициях.
