Public health in the town of Debrecen as reflected in archive documents Mrs. Zoltán Mervó Starting from early data related to public health scattered in different archive units, we present the resources about the problem from the 18—19th centuries and show the development of municipal public health on this basis. Since the history of pharmacies in Debrecen in the 18—19th centuries has been already elaborated, we only mention it in short here. The study not only deals with the development of health care, but, also with protection against contagions, and with the activities of doctors, chirurgeons (archaic for surgeon) and midwives. It also refers to the spreading of quackeries. On the basis of head health officers’ reports we present the institutions of public health, we analyze the statistics revealing the conditions of public health in the town. Investigation of documents originating from the activities of the Office of Municipal Health of the collections of the Town Mayor’s Office in Debrecen, of the protocols of general meetings and of the documents about the committee of local administration has given us the opportunity to study the state of public health between the two world wars. Finally, we deal with the problems of public health in the period following the liberation of Hungary, listing the documents available in the Archives to the investigator who wishes to study the public health during the socialist era. The elaboration of data is meant to help the investigators of the history of medicine and public health, as well as to help those doctors of the present day (given tody’s Howering of the proffession) to understand their predecessors. Здравоохранение города Дебрецена в свете данных архивных документов Мерво Золтанне Исходя из более ранних довольно разобщенных данных архивных документов относительно здравоохранения показывается источник материалов, касающийся этих вопросов в XVIII—XIX веках, а затем на их основе развитие здравоохранения в городе Дебрецене. Так как история аптек в городе в период XVIII—XIX веков уже разработана, то на нее происходит только ссылка. В этой работе показываются не только вопросы развития медицинского обслуживания, но и защита от эпидемий, а также деятельность врачей, хирургов и повитух. Упоминается также и распространение шарлатанов. На основе докладных главных санитарных врачей показываются заведения здравоохранения. Анализируется статистика положения здравоохранения в городе. В ходе исследования накопившихся в результате деятельности Учреждения главных санитарных врачей документов, архивов при учреждении городовых Дебрецена, протоколов общих собраний, архивов комитета управления открылась возможность изучения положения здравоохранения в период между двумя мировыми войнами. В заключение занимаемся и вопросом здравоохранения в период после освобождения, перечисляя какие документы может использовать исследователь в архиве области Хайду- Бихар для изучения вопроса здравоохранения в период социализма. Наша разработка направлена на оказание помощи для врачей, переживающих период расцвета страны в последние десятилетия, а также исследователям истории здравоохранения вообще. 120
