It was founded and for a long time edited by Pál Szabó, the rustic writer of Biharugra, who with the collaboration of Dénes Barsi started the paper as a continuation of the periodical „Komádi és Vidéke”, which ceased to come out in 1935. The editor’s office was put up in Berettyóújfalu, the seat of Bihar County at that time, and the first five volumes were printed there thoo, in József Adler’s press. The essay evaluates the different sources available on the origin and activity of the monthly Kelet Népe, and with the help of original letters and petitions by Pál Szabó to be found in the Hajdú-Bihar County Archives reveals so far unknown details of the unique struggle of the rustic writer, which at the same time is an important phase in Hungarian literature. In the middle of the 30-ies there were a number of publications in Bihar County, mostly of political, sociological or religious character. The Kelet Népe proved to be an outstanding one among them. Later it was edited in collaboration with Géza Féja by Pál Szabó in Budapest, and eventually, from 1939 on by Zsig- mond Móricz. Pál Szabó was already chief editor of the paper Szabad Szó at that time. It is a special feature of the essay that together with describing problems about the periodical it gives information on the sofar unknown correspondence by Pál Szabó concerning his activity about the paper. The above intriduced documents, though fail to throw light on every period of the Kelet Népe, still give an authentic picture of Pál Szabó’s efforts with respect to the authorities and his fight for the establishing and running of this literary organ in 1936—1937. Пал Сабо и «Кэлэт Нет» Андраш Береш Одним из самых возбуждающих, интересных и самых красивых начинаний венгерской литературной жизни было основание и почти семилетняя деятельности беллетристи ческого, и критического журнала «Кэлэт Непэ» («Народ востока»). Основателем и долгое время редактором был народный писатель, Пал Сабо, происходящий из села Бихаругра, который с участием Денеша Барши основал журнал вместо прекративщейся в 1935-ом году местной газеты «Комади эш видекэ» (Комади и его окрестность»). Издательство находилось в Беретьё- уйфалу, в тогдашнем центре комитата Бихар; первые пять номера печатались там же, в типографии Йожефа Адлера. Работа оценивает источники, касающиеся основания и деятельности журнала «Кэлэт Непэ» и с помощью оригинальных писем Пала Сабо, находящихся в Архиве комитата Хайду-Бихар, до сих пор неизвестные подробности открывает о беспримерной борьбе народного писателя, что является значительным этапом венгерской литературы. В комитате Бихар в середине тридцатых годов появилось на свет много печатных изданий, в большую часть политического, общественного и религиозного характера. Среди них высоко выделился журнал «Кэлэт Непэ», который позже с участием Геза Фея редактировал в Будапеште Пал Сабо, а наконец с середины 1939-го года был журналом Жигмонда Морица. Пал Сабо в это время уже главным редактором был газеты «Сабад Со» («Свободное слово»). Заслугой работы является и то, что кроме показа трудностей, касающихся журнала, показывает и неизвестные до сих пор письма Пала Сабо, связанные с мероприятиями, касающимися журнала. Представленные документы может и полностью освещают каждый этап журнала «Кэлэт Непэ», но верно показывает шаги Пала Сабо к официальным властям и осмотрительную заботливость между 1936—1937, ту борьбу, которую вел писатель за создание, поддержку литературного органа. 148
