FRAGMENTA MINERALOGICA et PALAEONTOLOGICA 12. 1985 p. 27-42 Lower Turolian (Neogene) Anomalospalax gen. n. from Hungary and its phylogenetic position L. KORDOS (Received November 26, 1984) Abstract: The author described in this paper a new Spalacinae (Rodentia, Mammalia) genus, Anomalospalax and a new combination ( Anomalospalax viretschaubi (Kretzoi)) from Tardosbánya and Polgárdi 4 localities. During the past ten years two new Late Neogene vertebrate faunas rich in small mammals, have been found which provided significant assistance in solving several systematic and chronological problems. At Tardosbánya (Gerecse Mts.) in 1975 D. JÁNOSSY collected for the Paléontologie al Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum a vertebrate fauna from a sediment-filled fossil shaft of the "red marble" quarry that has been worked for 2000 years. Among the classical Polgárdi localities a new site (Polgárdi 4) so far the richest in mammals was discovered in 1984, and was prospected by the author for the Hungarian Geological Institute. At both sites artificial layer separation was carried out which however proved to be superfluous because of their homogenous character. According to the previous still unpublished fauna evaluations, the Tardosbánya site can be correlated with the zone MN 11-12, while the Polgárdi 4 site belongs to MN 13. From Tardosbánya a complete Anomalomvs-type Spalacinae collection (194 items), while from Polgárdi only partially collected samples (25 items) are at our disposal for analysis. Cricetidae Roschebrunne, 1883 Spalacinae Thomas, 1896 Anomalospalax gen.n. Derivatio nominis: Combination of the generic names of Anomalomys and Spalax. Type species : Anomalospalax tardosi gen.n. sp.n. Stratum et locus typlcus: Uppermost Miocene, Tardosbánya Limestone Quarry, filling of a fossil karstic shaft destroyed in 1975. Diagnosis: The same as in case of Anomalospalax tardosi sp.n. Anomalospalax tardosi sp.n. Derivatio nominis: after the name of the type locality (Tardosbánya,Gerecse Mts, Hungary).
