Fragm. Min. et Pal. 9. 1979. Archidiskodon meridionalis ürömensis n. ssp. from the Lower Pleistocene of the Carpathian Basin István VÖRÖS Hungarian National Museum, Archaeological Department. Budapest ABSTRACT. A description of Archidiskodon meridionalis ürömensis n. ssp. (Mammalia: Elephantidae) from the Lower Pleistocene of the Carpathian Basin (Günz-Mindel Interglacial Age, Lower Biharian Stage, Templomhegyian Horizon) is given, in view its relationships to Southern Elephants ssp. At the NW boundary of Budapest from the Üröm-hegy in the Solymár Valley is lying one of the travertine occurrences among a series of them in the Northern Part of Western Hungary (SCHRÉTER 1953). From a lime mud layer at 4-5 ids' depth a fossil elephant tooth labeled as "Archidiskodon meridionalis cromerensis" was got to the Paleontological Collection of the Museum of Natural History (Természettudományi Múzeum) (VÖRÖS 1974, JÁNOSSY in print). During the comparative structural analysis of the tooth it became clear that it was different from the Archidiskodon meridionalis cromerensis (DEPÉRET et MA YET 1923) described from the SE of England (The 1923 paper of DEPÉRET et MAYET is unfortunately not available for me so I used OSBORN' s work published in 1942, pp. 980-981). Previously a Lower Pleistocene vertebrate faunal assemblage dated with the aid of the index fossil Mimomys savini HINTON came to light from the lime mud forming the substratum of the limestone in the Üröm-hegy (JÁNOSSY 1962). In the Üröm-hegy both the fossil elephant tooth and the above-mentioned Lower Pleistocene faunal assemblage came to light from the same sediment (i.e. the lime mud), thus their strati graphical and chronological position is the same, too.
