Novák Ádám (szerk.): Fontes Memoriae Hungariae IV. Varsóban őrzött magyar vonatkozású oklevelek, 1490–1521 (Debrecen, 2022)
Foreword
III Foreword The undertaking of our research group has come to an end, according to which we publish the full text of the Hungarian-related charters kept in Warsaw. The fourth and final booklet contains twenty charters issued between 1490 and 1521. Among these we find the documents relating to Polish prince John Albert’s claim to the Hungarian throne, and the Peace Treaty of Košice issued on 20 February 1491, which concludes his ambitions and is a rarity not only for its content but also for its design. Appended to the contract that is folded like a booklet at the shorter side of the three vellum strips we find the seals of Vladislaus II of Hungary, as well as seven Hungarian and five Polish dignitaries (No. 80). As Polish king, John I Albert conducted negotiations with Vladislaus II via envoys. In addition to the documents of the negotiation process, the alliance treaty signed in 1499 and its Hungarian ratification are also included among the charters (No. 82–85). In 1507, the confirmation of the Polish-Hungarian alliance became relevant again due to the ascendance to the Polish throne of “Old” Sigismund. Not only the documents issued by each party have been included in the volume, but another copy as well that was strengthened by a Polish notary (No. 86–88). The contract was renewed two years later in 1509 (No. 89–90). The two charters issued by the King of Poland bear the seals of 19 and 17 Polish dignitaries, respectively, the identification of which is given in the appendix. The Hungarian envoys of Vladislaus II played a mediating role during the peace negotiations of the Polish-Moldavian war of 1509. That is how the charter of the envoys ended up with Moldavian voivode Bogdan III (No. 91), and with the contribution of Géza Hegyi we also publish a rich Hungarian extract from the voivode’s peace treaty with Poland (No. 92–93). The Latin transcript of the charter is based on a diploma issued by Vladislaus II (No. 94). The notarial transcript of the treaty between Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Vladislaus II, King of Bohemia and Hungary, promising Vladislaus’ daughter Anne to Maximilian’s son Ferdinand, is likewise kept in the Warsaw archives (No. 96). The collection is concluded with the emissary authorisation letter of Louis II of Hungary, and his envoys’ report. Both are linked to the 1521 negotiations at Toruń, which ended the conflict between Poland and the Teutonic Order (No. 97–98). Every charter related to Warsaw that can be found in the Diplomatic Photo Collection of the National Archives of Hungary is included in the publication. In addition, an original charter is also included, which was issued for the city of Wrocław in Silesia by King Vladislaus II in Bratislava in 1515 (No. 95).
