THE BUILDING HISTORY OF THE FORMER JESUITIC GRAMMAR SCHOOL IN GYÖNGYÖS IN THE LIGHT OF THE RECENT INVESTIGATIONS Summary The building of the former Jesuitic grammar school in Gyöngyös (Heves County) was erected between 1751 and 1754 in two phases. With the help of the building archaelogi- cal investigations and the written sources the authors prove that in the first period the classrooms were situated downstairs and the so-called theatre was upstairs. This 'theatre' was used for dramatic lessons as it was usual at the Jesuitic schools in Hungary. As it was the only theatre of the market town, it was financed by the local council time to time. After the abolition of the Society of Jesus (1773), in 1782, this 'theatre' was divided into three classrooms. The local primary school moved into the old downstairs classrooms and the grammar school had to move into the new upstairs classrooms. Nowadays a school of music works in this building. In connection with its restoration the authors had an opportunity to carry on building archeological investigations from 2009 to 2011. 156
