FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK Volume 67 2006 pp. 89-92. Identity of two fairy moth species (Lepidoptera: Adelidae) described by J. Szent-Ivány, and other corrections to the "Checklist of the fauna of Hungary" M. V. KOZLOV Section of Ecology, University of Turku, 200J 4 Turku, Finland. E-mail: mikoz@utu.fi Abstract - Investigation of the type specimens of two species of fairy moths described from Hungary demonstrated that Adela uhrikmeszarosiella SZENT-IVÁNY, 1945 is a junior subjective synonym of Cauchas rufimitrella (SCOPOLI, 1763), and Adela reskovitsiela SZENT-IVÁNY, 1945 is a junior subjective synonym of Adela mazzolella (HÜBNER, 1796). Corrections of spelling are provided for Nemophora raddaella (HÜBNER, 1793) and Nemophora mollella (HÜBNER, [1813]); the senior synonym N. prodigellus (ZELLER, 1853) is to be used instead of N. auricellus (RAGONOT, 1874). Key words - Lepidoptera, Adelidae, Hungary, synonymy. SZENT-IvÁNY (1945) was nearly the last author who described new species of fairy moths (Adelidae) from Europe. Since then, only Cauchas breviantennella NIELSEN et JOHANSSON, 1980 was added to the European fauna (NIELSEN & JOHANSSON 1980). Rather surprisingly, identities of Adela uhrikmeszarosiella SZENT-IVÁNY, 1945 and A. reskovitsiela SZENT-IvÁNY, 1945 remained obscure until very recently. To my knowledge, these names were only used by the Hungarian researchers (GOZMÁNY 1952, 1965, BALOGH 1967) until KÜPPERS (1980) synonymized A. reskovitsiela to A. uhrikmeszarosiella. This decision was followed by WOJTUSIAK (1996), who first corrected the spelling and placed the species uhrikmeszarosiella into the genus Cauchas ZELLER, 1839. Later on, both these names appeared (as bona species) in the Hungarian checklist (SZABÓKY et al. 2002); alternatively, both names were synonymized with Cauchas rufimitrella (SCOPOLI, 1763) in the web-based Fauna Europaea (VAN NlEUKERKEN 2004). The name C. uhrikmeszarosiella (as bona species) is included at least in two other web-based checklists and information systems (SULLIVAN 2006, ZlCHA 2006).
