O. Merkl szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 67. (Budapest, 2006)

In 20001 had a chance to investigate the type material by J. SZENT-IvÁNY, deposited in the Hungarian Museum of Natural History, Budapest (HNHM). As expected, both names appeared junior synonyms of widely distributed European species; this conclusion had not been published yet, although communicated to some colleagues. However, ongoing investigation of the European fauna requires proper treatment of these taxa. I also use this opportunity to correct nomenclature of several other species of Adelidae included into the most recent Checklist of the fauna of Hungary (SZABÓKY et al. 2002). Caitchas rufimitrella (SCOPOLI, 1763) Adela uhrikmeszarosiella SZENT-IvÁNY, 1945, justified emendation of incorrect original spelling (Uhrik-Mészárosiellá) (ICZN 1999 Ait. 32.5.2, 33.2). The synonymy was published by VON NlEUKERKEN (2004). Type - Holotypc, female (abdomen lost): Hungary, Bükk Hegység (48°05'00"N, 20°30'00"E); labelled: 7x9 mm, print + black ink "Bükk hgs. I [1J928 V. 17 I Reskovits"; 9x11 mm, red margins, double black frame, black ink "Typus"; 9 x 32 mm, black ink "Adela Uhrik-Mészárosiella I Szent-Ivány"; 10 x 18 mm, red margins, red print "Holotypus"; 9x15 mm, pencil "8"; 8x18 mm, print + black ink "Cauchas rufi-1 mitrella Sc. I Kozlov det. 1999" (HNHM) [examined]. Theholotype is well within the "normal" range of individual variation of C. rufimitrella. Adela mazzolella (HÜBNER, 1796) Adela reskovitsiela SZENT-IvÁNY, 1945, syn. n. Type - Holotypc, male: Hungary, Eger (47°54'00"N, 20°23'00"E); labelled: 6 x 10 mm, print + black ink "Eger I [ 1 ]926 iV. 4 I Reskovits"; 9x10 mm, red margins, double black frame, black ink "Typus"; 9 x 29 mm, black ink "Adela Reskovitsiela I Szent-Ivány"; 10 x 18 mm, red margins, red print "Holotypus"; 9x14 mm, print + black ink "Prep. Nr. I 0325 <$"', 8x18 mm, print + black ink "Adela I mazzolella Hb. I Kozlov det. 1999" (HNHM) [examined]. Remarks - The holotype has outwardly directed antennái pegs, autapomorphic for the genus Adela LATREILLE, 1796 (NIELSEN 1980); this character suggests that synonymization of A. reskovitsiela with Cauchas rufimitrella (KÜPPERS 1980, VAN NlEUKERKEN 2004) is incorrect. Although the holotype is slightly larger and darker than most of A. mazzolella specimens, still the differences are definitely within the "normal" range of individual variation. Interestingly, HNHM also houses two melanic specimens of A. mazzolella, with extremely large fore wing spot, collected in Bükk hegység by M. RESKOVITS on July 11, 1954.
