FOLIA ENTOMOLOGIC A HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK Volume 67 2006 pp. 37-54. New ground beetle species in the Hungarian fauna (Coleoptera: Carabidae) GY. SZÉL Department of Zoology, Hungarian Natural History Museum H-1088 Budapest, Baross u. 13, Hungary. E-mail: szel@zoo.zoo.nhmus.hu Abstracts - Thirteen species of grotind-bectles (Carabidae) are recorded from Hungary for the first time. Seven species are deleted form the Hungarian fauna. With 16 figures. Key words - Carabidae, Hungary, new records, deleted records. INTRODUCTION The first comprehensive work treating the carabid fauna of Hungary (the Carpathian Basin, in those days) is by J. FRIVALDSZKY (1874), followed by another list by KUTHY (1897) in a milestone book that lists all the coleopteran species of the country. CSIKI (1905-1908, 1946) published two monographs on the carabid fauna of Hungary, the first in Hungarian, the second (revised and more complete) in German. It would be particularly difficult to determine whether in these works certain species are mentioned from present-day Hungary or not. The listings (and the locality labels in those days) were not very precise, such precision would be essential to assign the data to the post-WWII countries. For present-day Hungary, the first complete list was prepared by HORVATOVICH (1993), containing 488 species, 24 subspecies, and further 25 taxa whose occurrence in Hungary is doubtful. Another attempt at a complete list is by ÁDÁM (1996) containing 526 species including members of the former family Cicindelidae and further 20 doubtful records. This list speculatively includes 50 species for which there are no records known, but whose occurrence is very likely (they are either known from localities very near the border or their possible presence is suggested by their distribution patterns). The lists of both HORVATOVICH and ÁDÁM do not contain locality data.
