About 140 species of oak cynipid gall wasps are known from the Western Palaearctic (120 from Europe and contiguous territories: North Africa, Asia Minor), from which 95 are listed for the Hungarian fauna (Melika, Csóka & PujadeVillar 2000); only 6 species are known from the same region, from Rosa (PujadeVillar 1993, Pujade-Villar & Plantard 2002), 5 of them have been collected in Hungary (Ambrus 1974). A total of 38 inquiline cynipid wasps from 5 genera are known from the Western Palaearctic, representatives of which have been collected in Hungary (Table 2). Originally Synophrus Hartig, 1843 was described as a gall inducer, however, on the basis of the morphological characters of adults, without doubts, this genus belongs to cynipid inquilines (Ronquist 1994). Synophrus has never been a subject to detailed research and, thus, it is possible that they represent inquilines, which haven't completely lost their gall-inducing capability. Some examinations of the early stage of gall development suggests that Synophrus species "hijack" the development of a host gall very early in its development (P-V. unpublished data). MATERIAL AND METHODS We have studied the Hungarian oak cynipid fauna since 1991 and the material was collected from the entire territory of the country, and also Cynipidae collections of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM) (Hungary, Budapest) and the Systematic Parasitoid Laboratory, Plant Protection and Soil Conservation Service of County Vas (Hungary, Kőszeg) were examined. For taxonomic purposes, types of some species from Dettmer's, Hartig's, Mayr's and other collections were studied, which are deposited at the Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht, The Netherlands (NHME), Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria (NIIMW), and Zoologische Sammlung des Bayerischen Staates, Munich, Germany (ZSMC).
