S. Mahunka szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 63. (Budapest, 2002)
The new species is closely related to N. marbauensis sp. n. N. groenandeli sp. n. is larger, 8.5 mm, black-bodied species, its head sporadically and shallowly punctured and apical half of the fore wings infuscated. N. marbauensis sp. n. brown and smaller, 6.5 mm, head above nearly impunctate, wings hyaline. Neostromboceros sabahensis sp. n. Head black; white: labrum, clypeus, basal half of mandibles. Head shining, slightly and moderately densely punctured with pentagonal frontal field and deep middle supraantennal groove. Head strongly contracted behind eyes. Clypeus very slightly emarginated, nearly subtruncate. Antenna black; scapus, pedicellus and base of 3rd antennái segment white. Ratios of antennái segments = 10:9:30:27: 19:13:12:10:9. Diameter of front ocellus : length of gena = 7:2. OOL:POL:OCL = 15:7:15. Palpi dark brown. Thorax light reddish brown; mesosternum separated from mesopleuron with a wide black band. Thorax strongly shining, mesonotum and mesoscutellum with slight surface sculpture. Mesopleuron slightly and sporadically punctured. Mesoscutellar appendage and postscutellum smooth and shining. Tegulae clearly enlarged. Cenchri brownish white. Length of cenchrus : distance between cenchri =1:1. Head and thorax covered with moderately dense whitish pubescence about half as long as diameter of front ocellus. Legs whitish; black: fore and middle femora, tarsi, except basal 2/3 of hind basitarsus. Ratios of hind tarsal segments without claws = 48:17:9:4:13. Claws with basal lobe and subapical teeth stronger and larger than apical teeth. Length of inner hind tibial spur : length of hind basitarsus = 15:48. Legs and antennae covered with long, moderately dense brown pubescence. Wings infuscated, apex of fore wing from base of radial cell dark infuscate. Venation and stigma dark blackish brown. Basal 1/3 of costa and basal 2/3 of subcosta whitish. Abdomen dark brown, tergites 3-6 reddish yellow with brown hind margins and hind corners. Abdomen shining with dense and fine coriaceous surface sculpture. Length: 11.0 mm. Length of the fore wing: 9.0 mm. Holotype: male: "Malaysia: Sabah, Sipitang, Mendolong, T6/R, 8.III. 1989, leg. S. Adebratt". The holotype is deposited in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Lund University. This species belongs to the red group of Neostromboceros with many other species, although the coloration and sculptural characters of N. sabahensis sp. n. differ from every other species.
