FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LXII 2001 pp. 23-35 A checklist of stoneflies with remarks of published, undocumented species and two species new to the Hungarian fauna (Insecta: Plecoptera) S. Andrikovics and D. Murányi A checklist of stoneflies with remarks of published, undocumented species and two species new to the Hungarian fauna (Insecta: Plecoptera) — This article gives a summary of Hungarian stonefly faunistical data according to previous publications and the collection data of the authors. Two species new to the region are reported: Leuctra carpathica Kis, 1966 and Leuctra mortoni Kempny, 1899. The interesting but not well-documented Leuctra prima Kempny, 1899 and Perla pallida Gucrin, 1838 are also discussed. So the total number of exactly published Hungarian stoneflies with the two new species is 61. The collecting of L. prima and P. pallida in our waters was expected, but the presence of L. carpathica in the Zemplén Mts and L. mortoni in the Bükk Mts is interesting from ecological standpoint. Key words: Stonefly, new data, checklist. INTRODUCTION Stoneflies playing an important role in the life of small running waters is a very neglected group of animals in Hungarian hydrozoological and ecological publications. On the other hand most experts agree that this insect is a very good indicator of water quality. The species lists of Plecoptera in Hungary are rather old and incomplete. The identifications book of stoneflies gives us an illusory picture about Pannonian stoneflies (Steinmann 1968), not describing the typical stonefly community, that we find in our small creeks. It is caused partly by the old collection data, many species listed in the book have already disappeared from our waters and partly by the limited number of collection sites, which are not representatives for Hungarian running waters. Because of the unreliable faunistical data and the simplified illustrations, this guidebook is not really useful for non-specialist hydrobiologist or ecologist. In some other publications, the species compositions are reliable and the determinations are correct but the collection data are very old (Aubert 1966, Mocsáry 1900, Újhelyi 1969). In recent publications expert collected only in one or two running waters, where water pollution or regulation causes very strong effects on sensitive running water species including stoneflies.
