increase this number. Since then, some additional species have been mentioned sporadically in literature. The planned Checklist of the Diptera of Hungary (Papp et al. in prep.) was the main motivation for a visit to the entomological collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. The main goals were the revision of all published specimens, where recent advance in Tephritidae taxonomy has lead to new interpretation of their identity, and the identification of all unidentified specimens from Hungary. In total, over 2000 unidentified and about 1000 already identified specimens have been checked. In addition, the Tephritidae collected by me during two excursions to Hungary (30.VIII.1990 and 18-24.VI.1991) have been re-checked. Finally, a literature search was carried out in order to find new records since the monograph of Mihályi (1960). The following list summarizes the results of this study. Most specimens are deposited in the entomological collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM), with some additional specimens in the following two institutions: entomological collection of the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zürich (ETHZ) and the collection of the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Genève (MHNG). Types of some species had to be studied in order to clarify the status of Paroxyna ochracea Hendel and Trypeta confusa Meigen. They are deposited in the Naturhistorisches Museum, Wien (NHMW), National Museum of Ireland, Dublin (NMID) and the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris (MNHNP). SYSTEMATIC PART The subsequent list is arranged according to the classification and nomenclature of Thompson (1998). The following species are listed below: all species new to Hungary; all species which have been published since Mihályi (1960) from Hungary with their reference; all misidentified species of Mihályi (1960); some species which had been published by Mihályi (1960) under a synonymic name needing explanation, and those species which have been recorded erroneously from Hungary. The following abbreviations are used for localities: ANP = Aggtelek National Park, BNP = Bükk National Park, KNP = Kiskunság National Park. Euphranta (Rhacochlaena) toxoneura (Loew, 1846) — New for Hungary. Jósvafő: Tengerszem-tó, EVI. 1992, 1 female, leg. Tóth; BNP, Nagyvisnyó, [?Miskolc]: Bánkút, 850 m, 26-27.V.1981, 1 female, leg. L. Papp (HNHM). Chetostoma stackelbergi (Rohdendorf, 1955) — This species was first recorded from Hungary by Merz (1994), based on the study of the following specimen. Hungary: ANP, Szögliget: Ménes-p. mellett, 350 m, 28.IV. 1987, 1 female, leg. L. Papp (HNHM). Stemonocera spinifrons (Schröder, 1913) — Due to a misinterpretation of localities, this species was erroneously mentioned from Hungary by Merz (1994). The male in the HNHM is with the following labels: Erdély, Gyilkos-tó környéke, Kupás-patak vgy-e., 15.VII.1981. According to L. Papp (pers. comm.) this locality is in Roumania. Myopites apicatus (Freidberg, 1980) — This species was misidentified by Mihályi (1959, 1960) as M. stylatus (Fabricius), which is a coastal species breeding in Dithrica viscosa. All specimens in the collection were re-examined and proved to be M. apicatus. This species was already recorded from Hungary by Merz (1994). Additional specimens. Hungary: B. földvár, nedves rét, 14.VIII. 1969, 3 males, 3 females, leg. Tóth; Csévharaszt, 5.VI.1968. 1 male, leg. Móczár; Aranyosgadány,
