ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LVIII 1997 pp. 187-220 The native cockroaches (Blattaria) in the Carpathian Basin E. Vidlicka and Gy. Sziráki The native cockroaches (Blattaria) in the Carpathian Basin - Critical evaluation of all published data about the occurrence and distribution of the native cockroach species in the Carpathian Basin (Central Europe) is given. New distribution data about 14 cockroach species and subspecies from 16 collections of cockroaches are shown. INTRODUCTION The order Blattaria is a small insect group, and its species richness is especially low in Central Europe. It could be the reason, why they are on the periphery of scientific interest. Also their hidden life style contributes to their inadequate knowledge. Only cockroaches of the genera Ectobius and Phyllodromica occur in Central Europe. The taxonomic status of certain species and subspecies is unclear, though a few new species have recently been described. This paper involves all published data about the distribution of native cockroach species in the territory of the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe giving at the same time their critical evaluation and showing many new data about specimens deposited in the following museums, institutions or private collections: NMW - Naturhistorisches Museum zu Wien, Vienna, Austria; Dr. Ulrike Aspöck; HNHM - Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum, Budapest, Hungary; Dr. György Sziráki; MMB - Moravské múzeum v Brne, Brno, Bohemia; Dr. Pavel Lauterer; MMG - Mátra Múzeum, Gyöngyös, Hungary; Dr. Tibor Kovács; NMP - Národní múzeum v Praze, Prague, Bohemia; Dr. Ivo Kováf; SMO - Slezské múzeum, Opava, Bohemia; Dr. Jindfich Rohácek; SNMB - Slovenské národné múzeum - Prírodovedné múzeum, Bratislava, Slovakia; Dr. Hja Okáli; SSMB - Sredoslovenské múzeum, Banská Bystrica, Slovakia; Dr. Tomas Kizek; PMH - Prírodovedné múzeum v Hlohovci, Hlohovec, Slovakia; Dr. Lubor Juriga; PMK - Podunajské múzeum, Komárno, Slovakia; Gabriel Pastoralis; TMAK - Turcianske múzeum Andreja Kmefa, Martin, Slovakia; Dr. Vladimír Straka; ZSMT - Západoslovenské múzeum v Trnave, Trnava, Slovakia; Dr. Alfréd Trnka; PFUK - Prírodovedecká fakulta Univerzity Komenského, Bratislava, Slovakia; coll.
