The term "Carpathian Basin - geographically means the mountains of the Carpathians and the territory enclosed by the arch of the Carpathians and the high mountains of the Alps, bordered at the SW by the Dinaric Mountains. This border is more or less arbitrary. The contour line in our maps roughly follows the altitude 600 m on the outer slopes of the Carpathians and on the eastern slopes of the Alps. In the case of the Dinaric Mountains it follows the altitude 200 m - basically similar as it was drawn by Móczár (1972). This territory belongs to 11 countries (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Yugoslavia). The entire territory of Hungary and Slovakia belongs to this entity. The first records about cockroaches in the investigated area appeared from the second half of last century (Fuss 1855; Frivaldszky 1867; Herman 1871; Mocsáry 1877; Brunner von Wattenwil 1882; Petrogalli 1890; Pungur 1891; Petricskó 1892; Chyzer 1897). The important articles from later period were published by Ebner (1914), Ramme (1923), Marcu (1936), Bazyluk (1961) and Chládek and Harz (1977). The distribution of cockroaches in the investigated area were recently studied by Vidlicka (1992, 1993, 1994). FAUNISTIC DATA Occurrence of following 14 cockroach species and subspecies were found in Carpathian Basin: Ectobius lapponicus (Linnaeus, 1758), E. sylvestris (Poda, 1761), E. lucidus (Hagenbach, 1822), E. erythronotus erythronotus (Burr, 1913), E. erythronotus nigricans Ramme, 1923, E. erythronous ater Bazyluk, 1961, E. balcani Ramme, 1923; Phyl/odromica megerlei Fieber, 1853, Ph. metadata maculata (Schreber, 1781), Ph. maculata schaefferi (Gmelin, 1789), Ph. harzi Chládek, 1977, Ph. chladeki Harz, 1977, Ph. hungaricaV'xàWcka, 1993, Ph. transylvanica Vidlicka, 1994.
