Administrative divisions Currently the USSR is subdivided into 15 republics, the largest of them is called Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (RSFSR). The names of all the other republics have Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) ending. For the scheme of further subdivisions (including some obsolete terms) see Table 4. A complete list of all current primary divisions is given in Table 5. Snorter (unofficial) names used for some divisions are indicated in Table 6. The full (official) form should be preferred, except the Crimea. Other geographical names With stated exceptions (Table 7) proper names should be transliterated, geographical terms should be translated (Table 8), e.g. o3epo EaAxaB - Lake Balkhash, YiiiliiypHMiiJKHH 3anoBeAHHK - Ussuriyskiy Nature Reserve , THiimiapHHuiKHH xpe6eT - Gissarskiy Range, Peica K)3HHH Byr - Yuzhnyy Bug River, xpe6eT FleTpa IlepBoro - Petra Pervogo Range. If a proper name used in a Russian text is not in the nominative case, correct conversion to nominative-case form can be difficult for authors. In such cases Russian members of the Editorial Board should be consulted. Spelling of Russian names used in papers published in West-European languages should be retained, but correct spelling should be indicated if known, e.g. "Moskau" (= Moscow), "Tschita" (= Chita), "Oural" (=Ural). References If a paper contains a translation of the title in English, French, German or Latin, this translation should be used. In absence of such a translation the title should be translated into English (translation given in the "Zoological Record" may be used). The titles of books and serials should be transliterated; English translations, if desirable, may be added in square brackets. Abbreviation for periodicals should follow the World List of Scientific Periodicals ..." or List of Serial Publications in the British Museum (Natural History) library", 2nd ed., 1975. If both serial and a distinctive title of the volume are present, the first should be preferred. In case of parallel titles in different languages (e.g. in Kazakh and Russian) the Russian title should be preferred. The reference should end with an indication to the original language: (In Russian) or (In Ukrainian). *It is recommended to omit the word "rocyÄapcTBeHHbiH" (State) in names of nature reserves.
